A. J. Kitt

A. J. Kitt

A. J. Kitt , from Rochester, New York, began skiing when he was only 2 years old at a ski place called Swain Resort. His parents, Ross and Nancy, taught skiing part-time there. He started racing on skis when he was 6 years old and kept doing it until he was 14. He raced with a group called the Genesee Valley Ski Council.

Early life

In 1983, he went to a special ski school in Lake Placid called the Mountain House School. After two years, when he was in high school as a junior, Kitt changed to a school called Green Mountain Valley School in Vermont. He finished his studies there in 1986. After he finished school, Kitt spent one more year training and racing with what people think was the first private ski team in the history of the United States. He and many of his training partners were picked to join the U.S. Ski Team’s National Training Group. This group helps young skiers get better and become professional racers in the future.

In 1988, A. J. Kitt, who was just 19 years old, started racing in the World Cup. In that same year, he joined the U.S. ski team and got to compete in the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. A. J. Kitt became the first American male alpine skier who did downhill skiing to be in four Olympic games. But later, Bode Miller did it too, and broke the record.

AA really important time in Kitt’s skiing career was when he won his first big race in Val d’Isere, France, on December 7, 1991. It was a big deal for him. was special because it had been seven years since an American man had won any kind of big race like this in the World Cup. So, A. J. Kitt made history. In 1992, he did really well in downhill skiing and was often in the top five. At the end of the season, he finished in third place overall. This was a big deal because, at that time, it was rare for an American downhill skier to do so well.

In the 1992 Winter Olympics, which had a different skiing path than the one he won two months earlier in the World Cup, A. J. Kitt came in ninth place in the downhill skiing event.

In 1993, A.J. Kitt did something amazing. He won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Japan for skiing. Additionally, he was just the second American man, like his friend Doug Lewis, to get a medal in downhill skiing at the World Championships. He also had a chance to win another medal in a different skiing event called the combined. But, during the second part of that race, he made a mistake by missing a gate, like a checkpoint, in the slalom race. He went back up to fix it, but he ended up finishing in 28th place.

During the 1990s, Kitt had a successful time, winning four titles at the U.S. Alpine Championships, which is a big deal in American skiing. In 1996, A.J. Kitt had a big accident while skiing in Val-d’Isère, where he had won a race before. He hurt his knee really badly, and this injury stopped him from skiing for the rest of that year, including the World Championships in Spain.

So he had an operation and spent six months getting better. He returned to skiing in 1997, but he didn’t do as well as before. He only had one really good finish in the top 10 and a few in the top 20. Also, he had problems with his back in the last two years of his career. So, in March 1998, he decided to retire from professional skiing.
